Henri-Pierre Roché si iscrive alla facoltà di Scienze Politiche sognando una carriera diplomatica. Durante una freddissima sessione parigina scopre d’aver frequentato lo stesso liceo di Baudelaire ma di non averlo mai incrociato. Affranto, e amareggiato dalle sue frequentazioni di bruttoni come Picasso e la Stein, pianta tutto e decide di scrivere che la felicità si racconta male. Ci mette tutto un libro per dirlo, e questo libro si chiama Jules e Jim.
